Panoramic imaging has been at the heart of research into Online Planning since the first research project 'Wired Whitehall' was placed online in 1996.

Wired Whitehall is archived on-line as an example of early panoramic imaging on the Internet. It was set up to firstly explore how emerging panoramic technologies could be used to create an online urban information system and secondly to explore how on-line visualisation could enhance the standard WWW site. It was the first site in the UK to feature a 'virtual tour'
