Several pilot surveys were carried out through primary schools in Hertfordshire and Lewisham council to test data-collection methods.

The children in Year4, 5, 6 are requested to join this survey by doing some exercises which include:

• Questionnaire survey
• Direction finding test
• Landmark recognition test
• Drawing map exercise
• Spatial reasoning test
• In-depth interview

A sample of them were fitted with GPS equipment and RT3 (three-dimensional accelerometers). The former will collect data on their locational patterns and the latter on the intensity of their activities. The children also kept travel and activity diaries.
